Shook Me All Night Long

Dear Dharma,

I have been living in an old, wooden apartment for five years now and last month somebody new moved in upstairs.

Let me tell you this… I wake up around 3 am almost every day from loud moaning sounds and the bed shaking (no, not mine!)  The new neighbours are having really loud sex and it is so hard for me to go back to sleep.

I see the girl in the hallways all the time – do I tell her to keep things quiet?  What do I say?

Just so Tired

Dear Tired,

Oh, I’ve been where you are.  A new neighbour moved in next door at an apartment I lived in, and he sure liked to bring home the girls.  As it turned out, he was a spanker, and most of the girls were screamers so it made for quite the sound bite.  Like, I could actually hear details.

Anyway, I don’t think I would tell the girl to her face.  It would be an awkward message to deliver, and an embarrassing one to receive, non?  She’s new to the building and probably isn’t aware of how the sound travels, so I would want to spare making her uncomfortable if I could.

I would do one of two things. I would either:

a) Write a nicely worded letter welcoming her to the building, and oh, just to let you know, the building is really old. And really old wooden buildings aren’t particularly sound proof. Noise really travels, especially late at night.  Just thought you would want to know. 🙂  (don’t forget the smiley face, it helps soften the blow).

b) Talk to your landlord and let them know. They can deliver pretty much the same message as above, and it’s in their benefit to keep you happy if you’ve been there for 5 years.

That’s what I did, I called the landlord and told them what was going on – and she said “Oh!  I’m pretty sure he was out of town this weekend!”  To which I responded “Huh!  Well, he’s got bigger problems than my complaint to deal with if he was out of town, cuz no way she could generate that kind of show by herself!”

Don’t know how that ever turned out…

A polite note? Is it polite to be woken up night after night from the grunting and groaning of others going at it like rabid dogs? I guess it depends on if your getting any too!

      Dear Neighbor,

I’m glad to hear that you sex life is thriving, but would you mind trying to keep it down to a dull roar? Not all of us are fortunate to have found some that rocks our world and would like to sleep.

i agree with Dharma — while it’s not especially comfy to “hear details” ; ) we’ve all (hopefully) been there before (albeit, maybe more considerate of our neighbors) so bring on the nice notes with smiley faces or if you have a good relationship with your landlord, sure — let him or her do the deed ~
