Dear Dharma,

I am twenty years old and have never really worn any makeup. When I say “never really worn makeup” I mean a friend of mine forced a bit of mascara on me one time…

I am starting to think that maybe now I would like to wear a little bit. I have no idea where to even begin. Where do I shop for it? What do I shop for? What is a good colour for me? Honestly, I HAVE NO IDEA!

I don’t want to look like one of those girls with so much makeup on that if someone brushed up against my face it would stain their clothes, like come on – that’s WAY TOO MUCH, people!

I am confident in myself and believe in natural beauty, but maybe would like to be able to spruce myself up a little bit for a night out, date, or special event.

Help me Dharma!!

Not So Girly Girl

Dear Girl,

When I was a kid, I wanted to wear makeup so bad, but I wasn’t allowed to until I was 15.  In fact, it was even later than that, because I clearly remember receiving my first makeup palette as a Christmas present from my mom.  I was 15, and like, 2 months.

The other thing I clearly remember is her telling me that the tip to wearing makeup is to make it look like you’re not wearing makeup at all – meaning, accentuate your natural features with natural looking colours and highlights… and except for the heavy handed blue eye shadow phase in Grade 9, I’ve pretty much always lived by that.  It sounds by your question that this would be sound advice for you, too.

There are lots of looks that advice wouldn’t apply to, the more dramatic and noticeable, but if you are going for natural look, you don’t need to worry so much about that.

One of the best cosmetic stores, in Dharma’s humble opinion, is Sephora, and they are located pretty much everywhere now.

If you check them out online, they have a great How-To tab, so that might be a good place to start.  Also, if you go into one of their stores and surrender yourself, they have lots of staff who would be more than happy to go over the basics with you.

Another great place to dive into is Bee Beauty with Anna Bankester.  Anna’s been a guest writer for Dharma in the past and has a million fantastic tips to help you out.  Her advice comes complete with technique tactics, product write up’s and where to find what you need.

Hope this gets you on the right track and that you have fun figuring it all out!
