All Dried Up

Dear Dharma,

My husband always had dry skin but recently his hands have gotten to the point that they look and feel almost scaly.  I leave him really nice hand creams on his side of the sink, on his nightstand, on the counter in the kitchen… he is just not picking up on the subtle hints and doesn’t use any.

He is already very self-conscious.  How do I get him to do something about this without yelling at him that his hands might fall off soon? I really don’t want to hurt his feelings but I am at my wit’s end here.

Thank you,

Gail

Dear Gail,

Good for you in recognizing that yelling at your already self-conscious husband is not the best way to deal with this.  Also, his hands aren’t going to fall off.  Even without a medical degree, I feel confident is saying that.

Frick.  Please don’t sue me if they do.

I don’t know that I think really nice hand creams are the solution here.  Of course, we all know that Dharma’s not a doctor, so in absence of being one, that’s where you should go… to your family doctor.

Your husband may have a condition like eczema or psoriasis, and there are ointments that may help him be more comfortable.  So stop with the subtle hints (men don’t do well in that arena) and talk to him directly.

I’m hopeful you are able to get him to address this.  It’s likely he just needs a loving push in the right direction.
