When Your Keg Sucking Boyfriend is Stealing From You

Dear Dharma,

You ever watch something on TV, like your favourite sitcom, and there’s a story line on it that you think, “That’s so far-fetched, that would never happen in real life?!”

Well “Friends” happened to me and I don’t know the best way to handle it.

Do you know the episode where Rachel’s young college boyfriend is stealing from her and Monica?

My boyfriend broke into my place that I share with my roommate and stole something that belonged to her. It’s not like it’s something that’s irreplaceable but still. I know because he told me about it.

Should I report him to the police? Should I tell my roommate? I don’t know if I should even continue being in a relationship with him. This has to be a red flag, right?

To Tell or Not To Tell

Dear Tell,

Yes.  To pretty much everything.

Yes, I know the episode well…

“And what are you laughing at, Miss ‘My-keg-sucking-boyfriend-is-stealing-from-me!”

Yes, you need to tell your roommate – but not before you break up with your keg sucking boyfriend.  Because telling your roommate and staying with this guy is a terrible – terrible! – combination.

And yes indeedy doo, red flags a-flying.

Calling the police – well, once you tell your roommate, that decision may be taken out of your hands.  Not being an officer of the law or anything, but I’m pretty sure her call is the only one that will stick, since she is the one that’s been stolen from.

Also… this guy?  Yes, he’s a thief, but he’s dumber than a sack of hammers to boot and that’s a pairing that will just never end well.  Like, I’ll be honest – I have a certain amount of respect for criminal brilliance.  But… this guy?  He tells you that he broke into your place and stole crap?  WTF?!?

Kick his ass to the curb.  Today.  If not, I’ll count on hearing from you again…

My sister’s ex was steeling from all of us and she wouldn’t believe us ! It was horrible !! It lasted longer than we would’ve liked and we ALL try telling her but she was blind I hope love does not blind this poor girl.

It would be such a hard thing to believe, wouldn’t it… In this case, at least it’s not a question of believing or not, since he flat out told her – which, still totally floors me. What a dumb ass…

Anyway, yes, agree completely that I hope this LW does the right thing sooner than later, because really, there’s no question as to HOW this will work out, just when…
